Joe Allen - Fans' Player of the Year Award 2017
JOE GETS WALES FANS’ VOTE AT GLITTERING AWARDS CEREMONY
Joe Allen was delighted to take the honours after Vauxhall gave Wales fans the chance to vote for their Player of the Year in a poll run in partnership with Wales Online.
The Stoke City midfielder collected his Fans’ Player-of-the-Year Award at the glittering Football Association of Wales Awards 2017 ceremony, sponsored by Vauxhall, at Hensol Castle, Vale Resort, on Monday.
Allen got the nod for his dynamic performances in the Wales engine room. He also netted vital goals in the opening World Cup qualifiers at home to Moldova and away to Austria.
It is the second successive year Allen has bagged the fans’ award. This time he pipped Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey, Ben Davies and Chris Gunter, who were also short-listed.
Allen, capped 37 times by Wales, said: “It’s extra special to win it from the fans. They’ve been amazing home and away so thanks to everyone who voted.
“They’re just so positive – they embrace the whole occasion. Moldova [away] was a good example how they kept behind us and we got the goal. I’ve had a few songs in the past that weren’t so positive so I love ‘Give me hope Joe Allen!”
The award was a big boost for Allen as he and his Welsh team-mates prepare for this week’s decisive World Cup qualifying double header against Georgia and Republic of Ireland.
Vauxhall are proud sponsors of the Wales national team and also gave supporters the chance to vote for the Wales Women's Fans' Player of the Year, with Jess Fishlock coming out on top.
As part of the voting activity, Vauxhall offered fans the opportunity to win a pair of tickets for Wales’ sell-out Cardiff City Stadium clash with Ireland on Monday.
Cheryl Stibbs, Vauxhall Sponsorship Marketing Manager, commented: "We were delighted to give Wales fans the chance to vote. Throughout our sponsorship, we have been bringing the fans closer to the team and this was a perfect opportunity for them to show their appreciation to the players that have given them plenty to shout about this year.”
