WE’VE MET BEFORE: WALES VS REPUBLIC OF IRELAND

The two nations have met 14 times previously, sharing five wins apiece, but have only met three times in competitive fixtures, with Wales awaiting their first victory.

The most recent meeting came in Dublin seven months ago, when ten-man Wales had to dig deep to secure a goalless draw after Neil Taylor was sent off on 70 for a late challenge on Seamus Coleman.

Wales enjoyed the early bragging rights between the countries, winning the first four meetings. The opening clash came in 1960 at Dalymount Park, Dublin, when Jimmy Murphy’s Wales edged a five-goal thriller thanks to a Cliff Jones double and a Phil Woosnam winner.

It was another 19 years before they met again, this time at the Vetch Field, but the outcome was the same, with Wales emerging 2-1 winners. Ian Walsh and Swansea legend Alan Curtis were on target.

A third Wales win followed at Tolka Park, Dublin, in 1981, when the visitors came from behind to win 3-1 thanks to goals from Paul Price, Terry Boyle and Terry Yorath, netting one of only two goals for his country.

A fourth success followed at Lansdowne Road five years later courtesy of a solitary Ian Rush goal – one of his record 28 strikes for his country. The game was memorable for being legendary boss Jack Charlton’s first game in charge of the Republic.

Ireland finally got the better of Wales at the fifth time of asking in 1990 thanks to a late Bernie Slaven goal at Lansdowne Road. A year later, they repeated the feat, winning 3-0 at the Racecourse Ground where Niall Quinn, twice, and John Byrne were on target.

In 1992, Wales returned to Dublin and won 1-0 thanks to a Mark Pembridge goal – their last victory over the Republic.

The following year, Mark Hughes scored a consolation in a 2-1 defeat in Dublin before the teams drew for the first time in a goalless encounter in Cardiff in 1997.

The first competitive fixtures between the two sides came in qualifying action for Euro 2008.  Stephen Ireland fired the Republic to a 1-0 win at Croke Park before a Jason Koumas double – including an 89th-minute penalty - earned Wales a 2-2 draw in the return match.

The two teams next met in the Nations Cup at the Aviva Stadium in 2011. In Gary Speed’s first game as manager, Ireland won comfortably with goals from Darron Gibson, Damien Duff and Kevin Fahey. The teams also finished goalless in a Cardiff friendly in 2013.
