We've Met Before - Northern Ireland VS Norway
WE’VE MET BEFORE: NORTHERN IRELAND VS NORWAY
Last March’s vital 2-0 victory ended Northern Ireland’s bizarre run of five successive home defeats by Norway over a 12-year period. Jamie Ward fired the hosts in front after just two minutes before Conor Washington completed the scoring in the 33rd minute to earn three vital World Cup Qualifying points. The result sentenced Lars Lagerback to defeat in his first game in charge of Norway.
The countries first met when they were drawn together in the same qualifying group for the 1976 European Championships. Norway won the home game 2-1 thanks to a Tom Lund double, with Tommy Finney replying. That first encounter in 1974 is the only time the two nations have met in Norway.
Northern Ireland got their revenge in the reverse fixture, winning 3-0 in what would prove to be the first of seven successive meetings in Belfast. Goals from Sammy Morgan, Sammy McIlroy and Bryan Hamilton earned Dave Clements’ side the win, but neither country qualified from Group Three.
Between 1990 and 2012, Norway visited Northern Ireland for friendly fixtures five times and won the lot, scoring 16 goals in the process. The hosts got on the scoresheet just twice, with Jimmy Quinn and Kevin Wilson notching in a 3-2 defeat in 1990, and David Healy netting in a 4-1 reverse in 2004.
Northern Ireland have met Norway eight times and the fixture has yet to produce a draw.
