We've Met Before - Scotland VS Slovakia
We’ve met before: Scotland vs Slovakia
SCOTLAND v SLOVAKIA: WE’VE MET BEFORE
Slovakia are set to visit Scotland for the first time, with the two nations’ only previous meeting coming in the reverse fixture of the current World Cup qualifying campaign.
Robert Mak proved the Scots’ chief tormentor a year ago, netting in the 18th and 56th minutes to spark a run of five successive wins. Adam Nemec wrapped up the points by heading home in the 68th minute. Scotland enjoyed more possession than the hosts and had as many efforts on target as them – ten – but still ended up on the wrong end of a 3-0 scoreline.
At the time, what was Slovakia’s first win of the campaign moved them a point behind Scotland. It is Scotland who now trail the Slovaks by a point in Group F – but with everything still to play for.
Although Scotland had never met Slovakia before last October, they did meet Czechoslovakia on ten occasions prior to the break-up of the country, winning five, drawing one and losing four. The last meeting was in 1977 in a World Cup qualifier at Hampden. Scotland won 3-1 thanks to goals from Joe Jordan, Asa Hartford and record appearance maker and joint-record goalscorer, Kenny Dalglish. Interestingly, Czechoslovakia visited Scotland four times, losing every time.
