SCOTLAND v SLOVENIA: WE’VE MET BEFORE
Scotland are unbeaten in four previous meetings with Slovenia, having won two and drawn two, and are yet to concede a goal in competitive action.
It is only six months since the last clash, when Chris Martin’s late goal proved decisive. There were just two minutes on the clock when the second-half sub, who had been on the field just six minutes, broke the deadlock by firing low into the net after fine build-up work by debutant Stuart Armstrong.
The first meeting between the two nations was a goalless affair in the opening game of Scotland’s World Cup qualifying campaign for Germany 2006. The return match proved to be both countries’ final fixture in Group Five. With World Cup qualification already out of reach, Walter Smith’s side secured third place with an impressive 3-0 win. Darren Fletcher fired the visitors into an early lead with a lethal long-range strike before James McFadden made it 2-0 just after the break with another fine strike. Yet Paul Hartley topped the lot six minutes from time with the only goal of his international career. The midfielder’s fine curling finish polished off a sublime passing move.
The only other meeting came in a friendly in Slovenia five years ago, when Christophe Berra converted Charlie Adam’s corner to cancel out Andraz Kirm’s opener, which remains the only goal Slovenia have scored against the Scots.
