We've met before - Slovenia
WE’VE MET BEFORE: SLOVENIA V ENGLAND
England have met Slovenia four times previously – and won all four. The first was a friendly in September 2009, in a World Cup-warm-up at Wembley. Frank Lampard gave England a 31st-minute lead from the penalty spot before Jermain Defoe added a second. Zlatan Ljubijankic pulled a goal back for Slovenia but England ran out 2-1 winners.
A year later the teams clashed in South Africa at the World Cup finals. In the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, in Port Elizabeth, England qualified for the round of 16 after winning 1-0.
The only goal of the game came in the 23rd minute and Defoe was again on the scoresheet, converting James Milner’s cross.
The remaining two meetings were also in the World Cup, in qualifying ties. The first, at Wembley in November 2014, saw England fall behind to a Jordan Henderson own-goal in the 57th minute. Wayne Rooney, on his 100th appearance for England, replied from the penalty spot. And Danny Welbeck added two more goals to secure the points.
In the return, in Ljubljana the following June, Rooney scored a late winner to keep his team on track for Euro 2016.
Rooney's late strike, and two goals from Jack Wilshere, extended England’s good start to six wins out of six, but only after Milivoje Novakovic had put Slovenia ahead. Nejc Petnik's headed equaliser flustered England before Rooney netted four minutes from time.
