Defender Jonny Evans has had a lot of speculation in the newspapers lately but his move to West Brom finally went through. This is a massive bonus for Northern Ireland as it means he’ll be playing regular first team football again.
No disrespect to West Brom, but some would say he could have moved to another one of the top four teams, but in Northern Ireland terms he’s got to be playing every week and well done to Tony Pulis for landing him.
There was a slight concern ahead of the Faroe Islands game with Kyle Lafferty not being in the Norwich team. He’s been a major plus for us every time he’s played and it was great to see him do it again and get on the scoresheet.
The main thing is that Kyle’s back and I predict he’ll be massive for us against Hungary. Kyle is the main focal point of our team and all the good things that come out of Northern Irish football come through him, it’s as simple as that. We’ve got to keep him fit for the rest of the campaign and try and nurse him through.
Hungary have improved as the tournament has gone on and this isn’t going to be an easy game on Monday. I think it will all boil down to that game on the night. It’s all about who has got the nerve.
I’m hoping with our home fans in Belfast, for Hungary coming to Northern Ireland it isn’t going to be a simple task. Our fans are magnificent and it is never a easy place to come.
The effect Northern Ireland qualifying will have on the country will be unimaginable; it’s going to be massive and beyond belief. I think we’ve got enough experience and enough talent to make it. Now all we can do is get behind the lads and try to enjoy it.
All the best,
