Scotland trio earn call-up for Rio
Today the British Paralympic Association announced that Scotland trio Jonathan Paterson, David Porcher and Martin Hickman are amongst 14 footballers who will compete for ParalympicsGB at Rio 2016.
Porcher and Hickman are amongst the 12 debutants but for Paterson, who made his debut in Beijing 2008, this will be his third games with ParalympicGB.
David McArdle, the Scottish FA’s Disability Development Officer told the Scottish FA Website, “It’s great to see players being able to play at the highest level and it’s a real inspiration for the rest of the squad. To have three of our players selected just goes to show the quality that we have in our squad. The boys will gain valuable experience which will be very beneficial as we prepare for the World Championships.”
Veteran Jonathan Paterson, when speaking to the British Paralympic Association said, “This will be my third Paralympic Games and I don’t think we’ve ever been stronger. The amount of progress we’ve made throughout this cycle has been impressive, and it’s great to have new faces on the team who have created greater strength in depth. I can’t wait to step on to the pitch for the first time in Rio.”
David Porcher, who currently plays for Preston Athletic in the Scottish Lowland League, has had an incredible rise through the ranks. Porcher made his Scotland debut on February in an impressive win over Northern Ireland, and now five months later he is now looking to make his Paralympic GB debut at Rio 2016.
Since joining the Scotland CP team in 2013, Hickman has represented Scotland in three major tournaments – the World Cup, the Intercontinental Cup and the European Championships and will be looking to add to his already impressive CV in Rio.
First up for the three players, if selected, is the World Championship Qualifiers in Denmark at the end July.
