SCOTLAND (INTERIM): MALKY MACKAY
Malky Mackay, the Scottish FA’s Performance Director, took temporary charge of the national team following the departure of Gordon Strachan. The 45-year-old arrived at the Scottish FA in December 2016 with vast experience as a player and coach, as well as being instrumental in the development of young players. The defender enjoyed spells with Queen’s Park, Celtic, Norwich City, West Ham United and Watford during his 18-year professional playing career, achieving consecutive promotions to the Premier League in England with all three clubs. Mackay also won five Scotland caps. He kicked off his managerial career at Watford in June 2009 and subsequently won promotion to the Premier League as manager of Cardiff City in 2013. As performance director, he is responsible for overseeing the strategy designed to improve elite talent development across the Scottish game, working in partnership with clubs to deliver successful future international players.
NETHERLANDS: DICK ADVOCAAT
Dick Advocaat is in his third spell as Netherlands coach. The 70-year-old, along with assistant and Oranje legend Ruud Gullit, was appointed in May and is contracted until December. Advocaat took charge after completing last season at Fenerbahce. He succeeded Danny Blind, who parted company with the national team in March. Advocaat’s previous spells in charge of the Dutch national team were between 1992-1994 and 2002-2004. Advocaat kicked off his professional playing career in 1966 with Den Haag. The defensive midfielder also enjoyed spells with the likes of Roda JC, VVV- Venlo, Sparta Rotterdam and Utrecht before hanging up his boots in 1984. He then embarked on a long and successful managerial career which has also included spells with the likes of PSV Eindhoven, Borussia Monchengladbach and Sunderland. He won the UEFA Cup with Zenit St Petersburg in 2008, beating former club Rangers, who he led to the domestic treble during his first of four seasons at Ibrox. He boasts vast international experience, having also managed United Arab Emirates, South Korea, Belgium, Russia and Serbia.
