WE’VE MET BEFORE: WALES VS GEORGIA
Wales will be determined to record their first ever win over Georgia after losing each of three previous clashes, including two at home.
They first met back in 1994, with a Wales team including Chris Coleman as well as Ian Rush, Mark Hughes and Dean Saunders – back from suspension – but it was a humbling experience under manager Mike Smith with the Georgians racing to an emphatic 5-0 victory.
Wales had previously suffered a 3-2 defeat in Moldova, so this was another early blow to their hopes of reaching the finals of Euro 1996. Georgia raced to victory with two goals from Temur Ketsbaia, who later played for Newcastle, Wolves and Dundee. Further goals were delivered by Georgi Kinkladze, who later joined Manchester City, Gocha Gogrichiani and Shota Arveladze.
In the return, in Cardiff, Kinkladze scored again to earn the visitors a 1-0 victory.
The most recent clash was a friendly in Swansea, in August 2008. Jason Koumas gave Wales the lead but Levan Kenia leveled before a last minute winner from Georgia’s Beka Gotsiridze.
