WE’VE MET BEFORE

SCOTLAND vs LITHUANIA

These teams are no strangers, with eight previous clashes in the space of just 13 years – all in European Championship qualifiers.

However, Scotland never qualified for the finals having played against Lithuania, though they have lost only once against them, while winning five and drawing two.

The first meeting ended in a 0-0 draw, in 1998, in Vilnius, but in the return at Hampden Park, Craig Brown’s men won 3-0 with second-half goals from Don Hutchison, Gary McSwegan and Colin Cameron.

Scotland suffered their first and only defeat so far when the teams met in Kaunas in 2003. Tomas Razanauskas netted the winner from the penalty spot following a mistake by Jackie McNamara.

In the return, at Hampden Park, teenager Darren Fletcher got the winner. Still only 19 and a Manchester United starlet, Fletcher came off the bench to score in the 70th minute – and secure Scotland’s play-off place ahead of the 2004 finals. But a 6-1 aggregate loss to the Netherlands ended their hopes of qualifying.

Two more meetings came in the 2008 European Championship qualifiers, with the first clash, in Kaunas, seeing the Scots follow up their 6-0 home victory over the Faroes Islands with a 2-1 win in Lithuania.

Scotland took the lead when Christian Dailly headed home from Gary Naysmith’s corner before Kenny Miller stole what proved to be the winner, allowing them to stretch their unbeaten away run to seven games.

In the return at Hampden Park a year later Kris Boyd gave Scotland the lead. Tomas Danilevicius converted a penalty for the visitors but second-half goals from Stephen McManus and James McFadden proved valuable.

The two most recent meetings came in the 2012 European qualifiers. In Kaunas, Scotland were held to a goalless draw but in Glasgow they won 1-0, with a goal from Steven Naismith.
