WE’VE MET BEFORE – MALTA V SCOTLAND
This will be Scotland’s fifth game against Malta in Ta ‘Qali and they will be looking for a fourth win in a row. However, while they last played Malta there in 1997, they were at the stadium in June, playing Italy in a friendly.
Their first was back in 1988 and a an early goal from Everton’s Graeme Sharp put Scotland ahead before Carmel Busuttil replied in the 55th minute. That was the one and only time that Scotland failed to beat Malta, with the remaining four meetings all ending in victories.
Two years after the first meeting, Scotland arrived in Valletta again and a brace from Alam McInally secured a 2-1 win. The striker, by then playing with Bayern Munich, scored after just five minutes but Malta replied through Michael Degiorgio. However, the striker struck again with seven minutes remaining.
The next two clashes were World Cup qualifiers, and comfortable wins in both. The first, at Ibrox in February 1993, ended in a 3-0 win with Ally McCoist scoring twice before Pat Nevin added a third.
A 5-0 defeat in Portugal two months later ended hopes of reaching the finals in the USA, but in November of 1993 they won 2-0 in Malta with goals from Billy McKinlay and Colin Hendrie.
The teams last met Malta in 1997, again in a Ta ‘Qali friendly. Christian Dailly opened the scoring after just four minutes but Hubert Suda quickly equalised. Darren Jackson regained the lead for the visitors and, after Stefan Sultana replied, Jackson claimed an 81st minute winner.
